FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

In an effort to make this web site as helpful as possible I have added a FAQ. I receive a good amount of e-mail from the site and below I have listed the most common or pressing questions I receive. After you have read through this FAQ, and you still do not have an answer to your question, then feel free to e-mail me. I can not promise a response, but I'll do my best.

  1. Question: Who is Jack Hyles?
  2. Answer: From Christianity Today:

Jack Hyles, pastor of First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana, founder of Hyles-Anderson College in Crown Point, Indiana, and one of the leaders of the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement, died Tuesday (Feburary 6, 2001) after undergoing open-heart surgery. Between 15,000 and 20,000 people now attend services at First Baptist every Sunday. When he started there in September 1959, the weekly attendance was 44. "When he was a scrawny, nervous teenager who said he wanted to be a preacher, nobody took him seriously," writes the Chicago Sun-Times. "When the Southern Baptists kicked him out of their denomination in the 1950s for being too conservative, they said his ministry was over. When he chose the interests of poor, inner-city kids over millionaire church members, they said he'd never keep the doors of his church open. In more than 50 years of ministry, the Rev. Jack Hyles, pastor of mammoth First Baptist Church of Hammond, Ind., proved them all wrong."

  3. Question: Do you think Jack Hyles is God or something?
  4. Answer: No.

  5. Question: What is this site anyway?
  6. Answer: "The Jack Hyles Web Site" is an unofficial web site that hosts online books and sermons by Jack Hyles. The site and its maintainer has no connections with First Baptist Church, Hyles Anderson College, Hyles Publications, or Jack Hyles himself.

  7. Question: How did this web site get started and what is its connection to the former "Jack Hyles Home Page."
  8. Answer: Several years ago a member of FBC Hammond had a web site entitled "The Jack Hyles Home Page." It was part of my weekly routine to listen to Bro. Hyles sermons every Thursday morning when they were posted. I was disappointed when that web site went off-line. Fortunately, I had saved much of the material from the old site. I placed all the audio and text files on my server for backup purposes and then decided one day to fashion them into a web site for others to access. The Jack Hyles Web Site was born.

Over time people started sending me other written material by Bro. Hyles that they had either typed, scanned, or found elsewhere on the internet. Since Jack Hyles said that none of his material was copyrighted and that his desire was that they be distributed to as large of an audience as possible, I took the liberty of aiming at placing all of his books online. I've enlisted the help of many others and you can read more about the project on the "Friends of The Jack Hyles Web Site" page.

  9. Question: Why is this called "The" Jack Hyles Web Site?
  10. Answer: I've had one or two people ask why I use the definite article "the" instead of the indefinite article "a" to describe the site. My first answer is that "A Jack Hyles Web Site" just sounds silly, especially since there does not seem to be any other sites on the WWW that are completely devoted to the sole purpose of hosting Jack Hyles material. So I just call it "The Jack Hyles Web Site." This is not done to be deceptive, it just seems to be the simplest and most straight forward name for the site.

  12. Answer: The Webmaster of this site personally finances the cost of the site. If you would like to sponsor the site by placing a banner ad to your business web site please e-mail me.

  13. Question: Are you getting rich off of this web site?
  14. Answer: No.

  15. Question: Where Can I buy books/tapes by Jack Hyles?
  16. Answer: A few books can be purchased online from Amazon.com (see links on the books page) Other books and tapes can be purchased through:

  17. Question: Is it legal to put these books online? Aren't they copyrighted?
  18. Answer: Jack Hyles does not copyright his work and therefore they can be freely distributed. Hyles stated on a regular basis that he wants his work to be distributed to as wide an audience as possible. This web site serves as a means to that end.

  19. Question: How can I help put Jack Hyles Books online?
  20. Answer: I am so glad you asked! Please see the Friends of The Jack Hyles Web Site page.

  21. Question: How can I contact someone at First Baptist church, someone at Hyles Anderson college, or someone at the High School?
  22. Answer:

  23. Question: Can you tell me when Pastor's school, youth conference, the Women's Spectacular, or some other special event is?
  24. Answer: No. I do not have that information. Please contact the church.

  25. Question: Can you send me information on Hyles Anderson College?
  26. Answer: No. You will need to contact the college and I'm sure they will be happy to send you any information you might need.

  27. Question: Can you send me free stuff?
  28. Answer: I'm sorry. No I can not. But feel free to send me free stuff.

  29. Question: I went to HAC/FBC in 19XX. Can you help me find my long lost friend?
  30. Answer: The best thing you might be able to do is to post a note on our Hyles-Anderson College Forum. Someone might know who you are looking for. There are also some good people search features on the internet you might want to try.

  31. Question: I have a theological question, can you answer it?
  32. Answer: I have made it a policy not to answer theological questions on this site. I do not in any way want to be presumptuous and give the impression that I am answering for Jack Hyles. Therefore any questions of a theological or biblical nature should be directed elsewhere.

  33. Question: I have a personal decision or problem that I need help with, can you give me council or advice?
  34. Answer: As stated above, I have made it a policy not to answer questions of this nature from this site. These types of inquiries would be better addressed to your local pastor.

  35. Question: I can't listen to the sermons. Why not?
  36. Answer: You will need the Real Media player from Real Networks. Its free. If you are still having problems make sure you have a computer with a sound card and speakers, that you have installed the Real player and that you have your speakers turned on. If everything is working and you can hear some sermons and not others, then e-mail me and let me know what sermon you are having trouble with. I'll try my best to help.

  37. Question: I heard a sermon a long time ago. Do you have it?
  38. Answer: The only sermons I have available at this point are the sermons that are on the sermon page.

  39. Question: Will you be placing more sermons online in the future?
  40. Answer: I do not plan to make any more sermons available, other than the 75 or so that you can currently listen to in the sermons section of the site. But Ken Christensen, a member of FBC, has sermons available from his great site, Baptist-City.com.
